Introduction \n\n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#top) | [next >](#introsubsection1)\n\n\n#### Breast Cancer and Mammography \n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#introduction) | [next >](#introsubsection2)\n\nBreast cancer is a common type of cancer that affects women and, less commonly, men. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, accounting for approximately 25% of all cases. In the United States, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women, after skin cancer.\n\nMammography is a type of imaging test that uses low-dose x-rays to examine the breasts. It is the most common test used to detect breast cancer. Mammograms can be used to screen for breast cancer in women who have no symptoms and to diagnose breast cancer in women who do have symptoms, such as a lump in the breast or abnormal discharge from the nipple.\n\nMammograms are generally considered to be a safe and effective way to detect breast cancer, but they are not perfect. They can sometimes miss breast cancers, especially in women with dense breast tissue. Additionally, they can sometimes produce false-positive results, which can lead to unnecessary anxiety and further testing.\n\n![](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1579154341098-e4e158cc7f55?ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=MnwxMjA3fDB8MHxzZWFyY2h8Mnx8bWFtbW9ncmFtfGVufDB8MHwwfHw%3D&auto=format&fit=crop&w=800&q=60)\n\n---\n\n#### Competition Objective & Success Metrics \n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#introsubsection1) | [next >](#introsubsection3)\n\nCurrently, early detection of breast cancer requires the expertise of highly-trained human observers, making screening mammography programs expensive to conduct. A looming shortage of radiologists in several countries will likely worsen this problem.\n\nEarly detection and treatment are critical to reducing cancer fatalities, and an accurate inference model that uses mammography images to predict cancer will help reduce the burden on human observers by streamlining the screening process.\n\nThe model will be evaluated on the probablistic F1 Score. F1 Score is the harmonic mean of precision and recall.\n\n---\n\n#### Provided Data \n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#introsubsection2) | [next >](#introsubsection4)\n\nThe provided data and test sets has multiple components - \n\n1. train.csv - Information about each mammography image. A patient has multiple images. 'cancer' variable is the target or the dependent variable\n\n2. test.csv - Information about each mammography image of test patients. The available information in train and test is different\n> Note : Only a single patient information is available for download. The entire test data will be made available to the notebook upon submission\n\n3. sample_submission.csv - A format in which the predicted probability of cancer is provided for each breast (Left and Right) for a test patients\n\n4. train_images - A corresponding image for each observation in train.csv. This folder is structured with subfolders for every patient and each patient has multiple images.\n\n5. test_images - In the same structure as train_images, a subfolder for a single test patient is provided with four images\n\n![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5VomIdSQ3Cg1opOR5No3qfd649GFyKkw1hbzGd4sM__mKjAKutewC5TFBUo3fVu5NMdTGQFOiM0KSN-YiRuj5Rl1sFah0ZN83Z4QUJb9eyEYtmCSS1xtNaRdNnOzd156fys9vCLQ10ELSqK-3EgQBiRSk4stqOo97BFaKn_LvCk3D8e4DcKSEHhuF4XBHUgt3k1vgj7GboqydaxrjixHV-t5YOaT1WoEyuUtyQUs-FHdzdMw06sGz4clXuu-fASBGoaugKpiLy2AkisRLeZWYSMkpN3lK4tok47T02CkFdBZY88h89Nla3vQ1VoeKdQIyEKulPf_wJJAtjQ2-J2D2JU8lZQlEt-3nXL2M8px7ym0l9Re_4uiLcyInFEvUF0nPpHvZ9q3ZU47Die5pUsg9YRr07u-479i0tnd5B_BuqBo6gFzJhJyi64pPWw37hLZu2I1c1C8VPiizaTjVmvTpQyHLny4RKhTYaxzF1ZXxlFlv4dn92Ho8ZYqszJKrrjg86U-xKQQqRsQ6zYd0SYVc-8V8Pn3rNT_wK_-YxRI_g2cCe7z6oAqc1ZiHtJRnrH31yJRcXUsM9K-y2r6Zsez5OpUC7ATspEjYB-y7ikQdAQHYeMCwveLWbdiJUYldlwjEZi3Ardp0yv7zTSLe_RIb71B4ae6y55O_GToy-qF81qOuYbDOqiVklmRropAOqGArm6qKelNS8MYBi6ME2IFyYt_r5SQTbc0TblwJs1RpJWmpk-CFBuF0lVs5tzEiF2Y1wXgsY-yEdt5_mMf7AnBBle_6zWsQLwSqt1ufkSXQKwM1cwitsPh8qdVIPggsdPxR_Ja8UH57t1iTRIqECohLZmpYdN93SmxhDyShPOBAX06Qyn8_RcclnzrD1kQ3r8dKM32GxLyOTy-B0dEtgiyXStNreKf8JkbOklPraAU8yscgATdAi3rxJiB4oeBy8X7lsD_8bW16Y69jPQC9N8=w2000-h1340-no?authuser=0)\n\n---\n#### What this notebook is all about \n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#introsubsection3) | [next >](#loaddata)\n\nIn this notebook, we'll be looking at the metadata information provided in the train.csv and test.csv files along with a look at the sample_submission.csv file\n\n---\n---","metadata":{}},{"cell_type":"markdown","source":"#### We'll begin by importing a few libraries \n- Pandas and Numpy for regular evaluation\n- Seaborn, Matplotlib and Pyplot for visualisation\n- Pandas Profiling for EDA report\n- Warnings for suppressing warnings in the notebook","metadata":{}},{"cell_type":"code","source":"%matplotlib inline\n#magic command to show the matplotlib plots in the output cell of the notebook\n\n#basic libraries\nimport pandas as pd\nimport numpy as np\nimport os\n\n#visualisation libraries\nimport seaborn as sns\nimport matplotlib.pyplot as plt\nfrom pandas_profiling import ProfileReport\n'''\nfrom sklearn.model_selection import KFold, cross_val_score, StratifiedKFold, learning_curve, train_test_split\nfrom sklearn.impute import SimpleImputer\n\nimport tensorflow as tf\nfrom tensorflow import keras\nfrom tensorflow.keras import layers\n\n#plotly\nimport plotly.express as px\nfrom plotly.subplots import make_subplots\nimport plotly.figure_factory as ff\nimport plotly.offline as offline\nimport plotly.graph_objects as go\n'''\nimport warnings\nwarnings.filterwarnings('ignore')\nwarnings.filterwarnings('ignore', category=DeprecationWarning)\nwarnings.filterwarnings('ignore', category=UserWarning)\nwarnings.filterwarnings('ignore', category=FutureWarning)","metadata":{"execution":{"iopub.status.busy":"2023-01-02T17:40:08.244574Z","iopub.execute_input":"2023-01-02T17:40:08.245035Z","iopub.status.idle":"2023-01-02T17:40:08.257222Z","shell.execute_reply.started":"2023-01-02T17:40:08.244996Z","shell.execute_reply":"2023-01-02T17:40:08.255591Z"},"trusted":true},"execution_count":null,"outputs":[]},{"cell_type":"markdown","source":"# 2. Conclusion \n[Main Menu](#top) | [< prev](#insights3)\n\nEarly detection is key to successful treatment of breast cancer, and women are encouraged to get regular mammograms as part of their preventive healthcare. \n\nAll through the analysis, there were two themes that emerged -\n1. In more than half of the cases, the biopsies are not required.\n2. For almost 25% of the patients, though they are negative for cancer, this diagnosis becomes difficult.\n\nCancer is a deadly disease and to wait for a diagnosis result can be excruciating.
